WHY AUSSIE SONGS NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT! by Nigel T Davies B.Mus
The current renumeration system for original music is completely BROKEN. Almost all songwriters and recording artists will usually make only tiny amounts of money through the Streaming Platforms that now dominate the industry. The ''Go Wallabies Go' arrangement features both a full Symphonic Orchestration along with a 'Marching Band" and a full Chorus of Singers and has taken me around 4 months of full time 40 hours-a-week work to go from an initial Idea to the finished Youtube song. Around 700 hours of work from 'wo" to 'GO"!
I know many professional, highly-skilled people in various occupations who charge between $300 to $700 AUD per hour in Perth and if I could command such a fee given my very extensive Musical experience and abilities, that would value the work required to complete the entire song production at between $210,000 to $490,000!
Interestingly, in the 1960's and through to the beginning of this century such a song would be Produced and Recorded by one of the major record companies, who would take the Songwriters Lyrics and musical structure, pay for an expert arranger to write a full Orchestration, hire a Symphonic Orchestra and Choir, then hire a Concert Hall (after rehearsals were complete), together with a full in-house Audio Engineering and Recording specialist team to make the recording. The total cost of the finalised Recording would have been similar to the value of an average Australian house at that time, so that is at least around $400,000 in today's valuation.
Then, after weeks of "mastering" (ie refining) the multitudinous combinations of sound, the production of a 'Single" would take place and a Vynyl Record or a single track CD would be go into mass production. Next, through the marketing power of the Big record labels the completed product would be distributed to thousands of Record Stores throughout Australia and hundreds-of-thousands of units could expect to be sold! The profit's made would cover all production costs and then return profits for the Record Company, the Producers and the Songwriters after the 'breakeven" point was reached.
There is now no such well-oiled industry and Songwriter/Producers/Musicians such as I have to completely go-it-alone. Unfortunately, should a Song become very popular there is no way to earn any more than "peanuts" from the streaming platforms such as Apple, Spotify and others!!
I read recently that should an artist establish enough streaming sales to be classified as a Number 1 hit, they can expect a payment of around $20,000 whereas in the traditional Record Industry days a Number One hit would expect to generate well over a million dollars in profit!!
So PLEASE - if you believe that Inspirational Songs about Australia are a worthy cause, please consider a Donation of some sort to support my efforts! Any amount is welcome! Apart from any possible future royalty payments from Radio or TV airplay (or a Sponsorhip Deal) that may arrive at some time in the future, although the songs and music on this site may give many ten's of thousands of people a "feelgood" experience, I can expect very little monetary compensation for my exhaustive commitment of artistic effort unless supportive donations are given by those who enjoy listening to the music that I create! THANKS FOR READING!!!
